GNOME fails to process some special characters (including the pipe, which is rather annoying...) with the keyboard layout it defaults to if the XkbLayout in the xorg.conf is set to "de-nodeadkeys". It chooses the "German" keyboard layout while it should use "German Eliminate Dead Keys". This seems to be a Gentoo-specific problem as it does not appear on Debian or Mandrake for me. (Another user also had this problem, so it is not just me) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. change the XkbLayout in your xorg.conf to "de-nodeadkeys" 2. emerge gnome 3. start it 4. try to type special characters like |, § or ä Actual Results: The special chraracters do not appear. Expected Results: The special characters should appear. Workaround: Change the keyboard layout from "German" to "German/Basic" in the GNOME Keyboard configuration. Oops, that should have been "German Eliminate Dead Keys" in the workaround, forgot to change it. :/ is this still a problem for you with Gnome 2.8 or 2.10 ( if you are using 2.10 ) ? I did not try it again as I already set it to the right layout when still using 2.6, but I will as soon as my computer is repaired. (I killed the PSU and I'm still waiting for the replacement... :-() any update on this? With Gnome 2.10 I get German Eliminate dead keys as default, but now there's another problem: I cannot type With Gnome 2.10 I get German Eliminate dead keys as default, but now there's another problem: I cannot type ä, ö, ü and § with any of the German keyboard layouts which are included in Gnome. The pipe works though. reporter: so this bug should be marked resolved or have the topic changed since the original problem has been "solved"? Feel free to close it, I'm using the US keyboard layout most of the time anyway. If anybody else has this problem, (s)he can file the bug again. reporter says original problem is fixed in more recent version. |
