A bit of version information: kde-frameworks 5.24 kde-plasma 5.7.1 kde-apps 16.04.3 media-libs/phonon 4.9.0 USE=designer pulseaudio qt4 qt5 vlc -aqua -debug -gstreamer -zeitgeist media-libs/phonon-vlc 0.9.0 USE=qt4 qt5 -debug media-sound/pulseaudio 9.0 USE=X alsa alsa-plugin asyncns bluetooth caps dbus glib ipv6 native-headset orc ssl tcpd udev webrtc-aec -doc -equalizer -gdbm -gnome -gtk -jack -libressl -libsamplerate -lirc -neon -ofono-headset -oss -qt4 -realtime -selinux -sox -system-wide -systemd -test -xen -zeroconf (but was also broken with pulseaudio 8.0) I've just discovered that this problem completely PEBKAC.
