It is not possible to build IcedTea from source without CUPS, even if you don't intend to use it as this functionality is embedded within the AWT library. The situation was previously even worse in that we hard-required it even at runtime. It now falls back to dlopen at runtime if you disable the cups flag. Fixing this is not trivial and we're hoping that Red Hat (upstream) will address it but this is not an issue for them as RHEL is obviously a binary distribution. The situation may change with Java 9, which has had significant restructuring. |
