I just switched to 4.7-rc1 (chasing a i965 PSR issue) and the VMware Workstation modules no longer build, because net_device->trans_start has been removed (finally) after being marked as deprecated since 3.9 at least.

A very simple patch is attached.

Steps to Reproduce:
emerge =app-emulation/vmware-modules-308.1.0

Actual Results:  
the build fails

Expected Results:  
the build should succeed

The overlay has already a patch for 4.7, please try it

wrong bug report, this is for latest vmware-modules version, 308.x

REFERENCE:

Bug 616958 :  12.5.7 version bump

Currently, we are @ 4.9.36 for latest longterm.

Current [Overlay] includes:

           vmware-modules-304.4-r1.ebuild
and        vmware-modules-308.5.7.ebuild ,
but no
           vmware-modules-308.1.y.ebuild
any more.

To me, this bug seems to be FIXED / OBSOLETE.

VMware Products have been removed from Main Portage Tree during Nov-2017.

Further development has been relegated to [vmware] Overlay.

Situation as of today, 30-Nov-2017:
Workstation : stable in [vmware] = 12.5.8  / released = 14.0.0  : Bug 634770
Player      : stable in [vmware] = 12.5.8  / released = 14.0.0  : Bug 639162
Modules     : stable in [vmware] = 308.5.8 / released = 329.0.0 : Bug 634862
Tools       : stable in [vmware] = 10.1.6  / released = 10.1.15 : Bug 634854
