Description J.O. Aho 2004-07-25 06:21:32 UTC
Gnome2 by default uses a backward order for ok/cancel/help and yes/no buttons, which makes Gnome2 not to fit into a mixed environment where using applications from more than one Desktop environment like Gnome and KDE.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge gnome-base/gnome

Actual Results:
The buttons are ordered: help/cancel/ok

Expected Results:
USE="goneme" emerge gnome-base/gnome

Should result in a more universal: ok/cancel/help

I know that many diehard Gnome2 users will not support this and calls those
behind the GoneMe project trolls, even I have been called that. The whole thing
here is to give people their freedom to do adjust their system to their taste.

For more information about the GoneMe project, please visit:
http://www.akcaagac.com/index_goneme.html

I hope you guy's aren't as narrow minded as the Gnome2-devel, but will allow
Gentoo users easilly be able to adjust the button order (and in future get otehr
changes to Gnome2).

Please, if you don't agree with what I write, then please continue to enjoy your
Gnome2 and ignore this bugreport. If you feel a need to write something negative
about me or the GoneMe guys or our opinions, then please do that at
http://gnomesupport.org/forums where you will find more people with the same
opinion as yourself.

I'm tempted to hope that we could slot gnome like kde is, so like /usr/gnome/goneme/ and /usr/gnome/2.x/, but i dont no if slots can be determed by USE flags, thought thats probobly alot of work.

I cant download the .tar.bz2 file from the site, else id put an updated ebuild for it, but you might want to check if breakmygentoo.net has it.
Comment 2 Alastair Tse (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-07-25 14:05:24 UTC
i don't think we are going to support goneme for a while, simply because it seems quite immature at this stage.
Comment 3 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2004-07-25 14:34:49 UTC
i dont see how this project can be 'imature'

it's just a set of patches to change default behaviors in GNOME that a lot of people have found to be non-intuitive

it's not like it's adding feature sets to GNOME or new programs or something
Comment 4 Alastair Tse (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-07-25 15:41:32 UTC
the whole point of these patches is to challenge the gnome project. i'm not going to add something that is basically a set of patches done by some renegade developers. the fact of doing this will just piss off gnome developers even more than they are now with gentoo already.
Comment 5 Alastair Tse (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-07-25 15:58:23 UTC
oh and btw, those patches are for gnome cvs, so they're not going to apply to what we've got any how.
Comment 6 J.O. Aho 2004-07-26 08:05:36 UTC
yes, it's the CVS, but sooner or later there will be Gnome2.8 and IMHO it wouldn't hurt to look into adjusting the ebuilds.

IMHO it would be easiest just to add (just a simplified example):

if use goneme; then
 epatch goneme.patch
fi

---

To call the GoneMe-"devels" for renegades, thats a bit to strong word IMHO, they would be really happy if they could work with the Gnome2-devels, but sadly it seems that those guys have problems to take critisim and listen what people really want to have, so there is no option but to make patches. If the GoneMe-"devels" are renegades, aren't then all people who has released their kernel patchs collections too renegade-devels and shouldn't be supported?

---

Joseph, maybe the patch package was updating when you tried, at least it did download for me and without any problems.
Comment 7 Alastair Tse (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-07-26 09:10:30 UTC
please don't draw analogies with different projects. if you subscribe to gnome-dev, you'll probably view the situation a bit more differently.
Comment 8 J.O. Aho 2004-07-27 11:23:39 UTC
Off topic:

Alastair, I doubt that the gnome2-devels makes any better impression on the devel maillist than they do anywhere else, all to many of them have an "elite" attitude towards others, more or less insulting people for asking them why or suggesting something that you would think as an improvement.
It's not a question about a handfull nuts who wants silly features for Gnome2, but a quite large number of people who does like to have Gnome2 to be something else, forking of projects has happen many times before and I don't think this would be the last time and sometimes there are some bad blood inbetween and in this case I think it's mostly from the Gnome2-devels who don't manage to handle critisism in a good way. GoneME don't differ in any way from any other fork off, except that they hope that GoneME and Gnome2 can emerge some day and give the users a bit more to say what they want to have.
I have always seen linux as the option of freedom, but sadly it's not that way.
Comment 9 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-08-03 15:11:48 UTC
still offtopic : goneme is to gnome what zynot was to gentoo. Even the naming implies that this project is nothing more than an immature act out of misguided spite.

At this point gnomeme is certainly not an option for inclusion, at some point it maybe can be rediscussed but i'm pretty sure it won't be needed.
Comment 10 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2004-08-03 19:36:47 UTC
not really, GNOME has changed the defaults from the 'standard' and it's quite annoying for a lot of people
