This issue is still occurring; it seems to not be unique to matplotlib as dev-python/pyzmq fails with exactly the same error. Please let me know if I can provide any more info. At some point this package started building successfully. Looking at emerge.log it seems things started working shortly after numpydoc-0.6.0 was stabilised, which may or may not be related. 1.4.3 is too old, let's stablize newer versions and get rid of it.
