After performing emerge sync the bootstrap.sh script compiles binutils and then proceeds to gcc compilation. The whole process stops when the complier tries to process file calls.c. It crashes and the only thing that helps is reset button.

This is using which CD?  Also, have you done anything other than what's in the handbook, such as changing ACCEPT_KEYWORDS?
