Hi ! 
 
In  
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc 
is a variable set to: 
sysmodmap=XINITDIR/.Xmodmap 
 
Where is this directory ? I have tried all x11 dirs without success. 
 
As I see, in ebuild xfree-4.1.0-r6 sysmodmap was set to: 
sysmodmap=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap 
I have tied this, an it works nice.
