1 is not the default, and makes the fonts overly sharp, whereas 3 is the default, as per boohomil, and looks subjectively better.

Changing this variable shouldn't make any difference with this ebuild version (actually I should drop this part altogether, it was for 9999 ebuild).

What's the issue exactly? Can you attach content of /usr/share/eselect-lcdfilter/env.d/ultimate after emerging unpatched ebuild?
