The strange thing is that it used to work in the past: last time I emerged testtools-1.8.0 was on August 26th, with the same version of pypy and the tests worked fine.

Happens to me with every python implementation (2.7, 3.4, pypy, pyp3). What could be wrong on my systems then?

No idea. I would assume missing deps, but I cannot spot anyhting.

testtools-1.8.1 works. Can we stable that?

The failure is due to test fragility (they match against python's stderr...), it should be safe to ignore
