this is by design. you have to opt into running the cronjob on your system. For opt-in it's better to change the default value of AUTOCHECK variable in /etc/default/mdadm to false or just comment it out. Executable bit gets lost after every upgrade/reinstall of mdadm package.
$ grep AUTOCHECK /usr/sbin/checkarray
-c|--cron honour AUTOCHECK setting in /etc/default/mdadm.
