Please attach the outputs of "emerge --info libxml2 readline ncurses" and of "ldd -r /usr/bin/xmllint" and "ldd -r /lib/libreadline.so.6" Perhaps you had updated to ncurses-6 or changed USE flags on ncurses and then deleted preserved libraries without rebuilding readline?
