Whenever I call xdg-open some.odt file I see error message:
 $ xdg-open somedocument.docx 
START /usr/bin/libreoffice --writer somedocument.docx
LibreOffice 4.4.3.2 40m0(Build:2)

Unknown option: --writer somedocument.docx

This happens if DE=generic and no dev-perl/File-MimeInfo is installed. I'm not sure about other situation. Nevertheless following upstream commit already fixed this issue: 13d9b0cac97e438bf7dc06452ee7fb3480907d88 Please, backport, or personally I just did tarball with git sources as of 20150716 and this started to work for me.
