I would like to close this off and work on stabilizing the 1.6.1 version.

That hasn't been in the tree for 30 days, so you'll need to wait a bit on that.

In any case, be careful not to remove it if you intend to stabilize it...

Yes I've made notes on 30days+ in the 1.6.1 bump, but thank you.
Nor do I plan to remove it flat out.
1.5 and up contain some pretty useful bug fixes.

bug 576828 tracks a newer version stable req.
This is no longer needed.
