Looking at the configure.ac for 1.6.3, here: https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/buildd-tools/schroot.git/tree/configure.ac?id=release/schroot-1.6.3#n292 shows that its test is wrong. It looks for {/usr,}/sbin/btrfs and {/usr,}/sbin/btrfsctl, and if either is missing claims that it can't find BTRFS.

But btrfsctl was deprecated years ago, back in the brtfsprogs-0 days, and is no longer shipped in even sys-fs/btrfs-progs-3.14.2, the oldest version still in Portage. So that test never succeeds.

Also, the versions of dev-util/schroot in Portage (1.6.3 stable, 1.6.5-r1 unstable) are ancient. Upstream is on 1.6.10 on the 1.6 branch and 1.7.2 on the 1.7 branch. See https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/buildd-tools/schroot.git/refs/

This has now been fixed in dev-util/schroot-1.6.10.  I will be attempting to get this version stabilized within the next 30 days.
