On my dual AMD Optron system (Gentoo 2004.1 Stage 1 install)  the following kernels WILL build:

gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.5-r1
gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.7-r2
gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.7-r3

Then two later kernels fail during 'make bzImage':

gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.7-r5
gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.7-r6

The end of the compile output looks like:

  LD    init/built-in.o
  LD    .tmp_vmlinux1
drivers/built-in.o(.text+0x2a59e):  In function 'blk_recount_segments': : undefined reference to 'iommu_bio_merge'

and several more undefined references to the same 'iommu_bio_merge'
