I have no idea how to troubleshoot this, so I'm passing this to x11.

If the whole computer freezes (no longer reacts to ping/magic SysRq/etc.) then it is likely a kernel issue, not X.

I can confirm that not ping was possible.
Comment 4 Martin Walch 2015-08-18 18:45:16 UTC
Are you really, really sure that it completely freezes?

There is a problem with Gen3/4 Intel graphics chips when using x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.99.917 with sna acceleration (which is the default setting), which may completely freeze the display and it is hard to debug, but it is fixed with x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.99.917-r2.

It's some time ago, but I remember the description above to be accurate.
It was not possible to switch to a console by Ctrl + Alt + Fx, no Ctrl + Alt + Backspace, no Ctrl + Alt + Del. As mentioned above also no response to ping.

Do try the SysRq keys next time it happens. If they work, then the kernel is not completely frozen.

Run "sysctl kernel.sysrq" to make sure they are enabled (a value of 1).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key#Uses has a nice set of magic keys to "cleanly" reboot a seemingly frozen system.

Cheers

I can confirm this issue with on ThinkPad X60s with has a Gen 3 Intel graphics chip. With x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.99.917 and also x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.99.917-r2 the laptop freezes, the screen shows garbage color artifacts. Downgrading to x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.99.916 "fixes" the issue. I have not tried the SysRq features to verify if the PC freezes "completely" or only almost. At least, non of the usual ways to shutdown/reboot worked, e.g. pressing the power button (which is bound to shutdown via ACPI).

After X starts, it will take control over all input devices, including the power button (which counts as an input device too).
You have to wrestle back control from the X server through Alt+SysRq+R if it hangs.
