When using lightdm, an explicit dependency on dbus[X] should be made, otherwise lightdm will be unable to launch Xfce4 (for example)

I see no evidence that lightdm should depend on dbus. I need something more than your "word" to make me add that dependency. Are you sure lightdm is missing that dependency and not something else?
