The logon (i.e. the display of the /etc/issue file and the logon prompt) takes a long time if DHCP is unreachable. Could be related to bug 38538. Other distributions, however (e.g. Knoppix), "background" the DHCP process so a logon is possible.

How about the "backgrounding" functionality of Knoppix which doesn't need a timeout?
