From those discussions, probably related to USE=-X

Gnus works in app-editors/emacs-24.3-r6 (which I have downgraded to for the time being).

AFAICS, this is already fixed upstream in the emacs-24 branch?

Yes, it seems to be working if I build from git.  I haven't verified that that commit is responsible, but it sure looks likely.
