While zipping large files with gzip system hanged. it was not allowing to login from any other terminal or from console.  Hard Disk light was on all the time.  Physically restarted the system.  no one was able to access server or connect to the server.  Is it known issue ?

can you maybe provide us with some more information than this? versions of things you have installed, like gcc, glibc, kernel, gzip, what your hardware is, etc etc.  Really, there's nothing anyone can do with your bug report the way you've reported it.  Please provide us with more info, and feel free to reopen the bug when you do.

that's a pretty old box

try it with a newer kernel
