Github provides zip archives from commits. So it would be nice if we could have support for it in the eclass

Unless you have a very good reason to use zip instead of tar, it's just ugly featurism and I'm not going for it. GNU tar has a nice switch to unpack into custom directory, with zip I'd have to reinvent the wheel.

You are absolutely right, tarballs are the better solution.
