Description Quantumstate 2004-05-26 12:49:59 UTC
It seems that there's some confusion about whether or not Stage 1 needs internet.

Yes I saw:
"A stage1 installation can only be performed when you have a working Internet connection."

But seemingly countermanding this is the subsequent:
"Gentoo's Universal LiveCD is a bootable CD suitable to install Gentoo without networking.", in apparent contrast to the Minimal. As a Suse vet of 5 years, I'm used to mistakes and contradictions in guides. Since it doesn't make sense that Stage 1 is internet-only (when all the necessary philes are on-disk) I moved forward and failed, as others apparently have.

Suggest the Handbook clarify, as my internet is down, and I had to go to the library to post this. (My internet is via WiFi, and the Orinoco driver fails to load into LiveCD, with symbol errors)

I did find an apparent workaround to installing Stage 1 without internet in the Alternative Install guide, so will take that home and try it, hoping it works. If not, I guess I'll settle for 3, and maybe fsck with optimizing later. Really wanted to optimize tho...

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Strict following of the Handbook up to scripts/bootstrap.sh
2.
3.

Actual Results:
Failed, as could not connect to the internet.

Expected Results:
Offered an alternative non-internet method.

Can't. Not home.

Handbook is very explicit about requiring a stage3 for a networless install. Please check http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=2#doc_chap2
Universal liveCDs contain stage3s and are suitable for such an install.

The online version has been made clearer about this a few weeks ago.

Read my remarks a little more carefully. It is clear in one sentence, but further on there are numerous comments which appear to contradict this. If you checked the forum, it is a point of confusion.

Take it, or leave it. I'm splitting.
