I'm not entirely sure that the exit code -11 is the actual problem, as 'make install' seems to move on.. The old 2.71 wasn't the release version (blender upstream doesn't mark their tarballs RC), and if it's fixed there, then 2.71-r2 will be the next stable candidate.
