Here are its last words before death.  You'll note that there seems to be a messed up directory in there (/var/tmp/portage/fam-2.7.0/image//usr/lib/libfam.la"

emerge kdebase
Actual Results:  
Same error as in details.

Expected Results:  
successful compilation and installation of kdebase

That's not in the kdebase ebuild.  Do something like 

grep "/var/tmp" /usr/lib/*.la

and it will show you the offending files.  Edit them and all will work again.
