Bug 51755 – emerge makes konsole go mad

I'm using KDE-3.2.2.
This is not a new bug, it was also present in older versions.

Sometimes, randomly after using emerge (in particular emerge -upvD world, but not only), konsole screws up:

I type some characters in the command line, then I see a CR (but not an LF) and I overwrite the current line. then, if i insist, I move backwards into the lines, with a very nasty effect. If I write blind, commands DO work, but they're impossible to read. The only solution, in such case, is to close konsole and reload it.

example:

 * GNU info directory index is up-to-date.
 * IMPORTANT: 1 config files in /etc need updating.
 * Type emerge --help config to learn how to update config files.

I press UP several times (but it happens also if I just write). look where I'm writing....

i've seen this too, and i'm not sure if it's console or an ncurses type thing because it happens on some machines and not on others.

i've had the same problem... as soon as the command line tries to wrap it starts moving the whole line up the screen by a line with each character typed and then starts writing over the same line rather than wrapping to a new one.

Still happens in KDE-3.3.0.

Does it happen with other terms or just with konsole?

it doesn't ever happen with the regular (non-X) console. i've never extensively used other virtual terminals.

After some googling, it seems there are wider issues with bash, readline and 
escape characters (that portage uses a lot). I don't know if we can help you, 
I can only suggest to try bash-3 to see if it helps.
