See linked upstream bug. Clients using this library get a "bad protocol" response. In particular: git-annex is affected by this bug.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Add a new user in ejabberd
2. Try to configure it in git annex
Actual Results:  
You get the message "Unable to connect to the Jabber server. Maybe you entered the wrong password?"

Expected Results:  
Successful authentification

This might be fixed in 15.03 now in the tree but I haven't specifically checked.
