Since https://github.com/git/git/commit/af31a456b4cd38f2630ed8e556e23954f806a3cc __git_ps1 is no longer shipped in the bash completion file but in contrib/completion/git-prompt.sh. The problem is that Gentoo ships this file compressed:

$ equery f git | grep prompt
/usr/share/doc/git-1.8.5.5/git-prompt.sh.bz2

This makes it hard to include in your ~/.bashrc.
