The latest version of libevdev in the portage tree is 0.6-r1, however the latest available stable version from freedesktop.org is 1.1. I've tried writing an ebuild for the newest version and the current ebuild seems to work just fine, the only difference is that it needs to be renamed for the new version.

libevdev-1.2.1 was added to the tree.
