BTW, there is an extant ebuild that can be used as a starting point.
See bug #40027, which I added as a parent dependency

This application doesn't seem to be maintained anymore. 
Last release (0.942) dates from June 2002, and the gdam.org domain doesn't not exist any longer.

This seems dead? If there are no news about this I don't think this can be considered a valid enhancement for gentoo, as dead projects usually makes life harder to devs and users.
