The current version in portage (1.10.2) is outdated. Because of API changes in the offical twitter API, twitter streams and some other data requests won't work anymore with dev-python/twitter < 1.14.1.

Because of this I suggest removing all versions lower than 1.14.1 and bumping the ebuild to 1.14.1. No changes to the ebuild is needed just change the version number.
