While installing gentoo from a stage 1 tarball. All instructions complete
normally until emerge system. The following error halts the install.

checking for integral type equal to pointer size....configure:error can not run
test program while cross compiling.
!!!Error The ebuild did not complete successfully
!!!Function src_compile, line 1 exitcode 1 no error message
!!!emerge aborting on /usr/portage/sys-libs/db/db-3.2.9.ebuild .

I have tried starting from scratch. Fdisking and reformating the partitions.

Can you please try again with --debug so we can see the optimization and link
flags, and also the output of gcc --version would be nice as well.

Thanks!

Note that this "bug" is not specific to the db package, but would very likely
occur with lots of packages, assuming that I am correct in my educated guess
that it is a compiler flag.
Comment 3 Angel Ortiz 2002-07-15 08:11:14 UTC
My apoligies for not including the gcc ver. It looks like it cleared up. I
think I might have had an error during bootstrap that was not focused. Before
seeing your update I did an emerge --clean rsync and bootstrapped again. Now
emerge system is running without stopping on the same error. It is going right
now :) Thank you.

has to do with setting an arch when merging binutils... binutils gets really
upity when it is compiled with -march= anything interesting.
Comment 5 Jon Nelson (RETIRED) 2002-07-16 20:48:04 UTC
I am closing this bug report as it would appear that either

a) the problem is resolved
b) there was not a problem that was not a result of configuration error

If these statements are in error, please re-open the bug and explain why.

Thanks!
