When trying to emerge cisco-vpnclient-3des-4.0.3b-r4.ebuild I get error messages about the digest not be correct. I downloaded my tar file from an legit source (i.e the universtiy).

Here are the specifics:
Downloaded file name: vpnclient-linux-4.0.3.B-k9.tar.gz

The file decompress fine and appears to have no problems.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Download vpnclient-linux-4.0.3.B-k9.tar.gz to /usr/portage/distfiles
2. emerge cisco-vpnclient-3des-4.0.3b-r4
3.

Actual Results:
!!! File is corrupt or incomplete. (Digests do not match)
>>> our recorded digest: 0f5cc298818b311b3a2b7cdc7430eda8
>>>  your file's digest: 576eb5e22c14fd2f18b5c00dc3806c09
!!! File does not exist: /usr/portage/distfiles//vpnclient-linux-4.0.3.B-k9.tar.gz

Recreating the package digest fixed the problem.

I'm sorry, but your client tarball is *not* the official Cisco tarball. More than likely, you university has already placed it's connection profile in the tarball, which will cause the client to fail on emerge.

*ONLY* the official tarball from Cisco's CCO site is supported. Other tarballs will work, but you won't get any customizations your university might have made.

If you're wanting to install the one from your university, I would honestly suggest you either modify the ebuild to ensure it installs properly, or you simply install using the shell script inside the tarball.
