Maybe we should have a "backup" default for arches with libev USE masked:
arch/sh/use.mask:libev
arch/sh/ChangeLog:  Use.mask libev
arch/ia64/use.mask:libev
arch/ia64/ChangeLog:  Use.mask libev
arch/alpha/use.mask:libev
arch/alpha/ChangeLog:  Use.mask libev

For example, app-crypt/mit-krb5-1.11.4 wants:
|| ( dev-libs/libverto[libev] dev-libs/libverto[libevent]
dev-libs/libverto[tevent] )

Then, maybe some of the other USEs could be chosen by default in affected arches
