Unpacked the tarball, tweaked the portdir in the config, did an emerge -1 portage then tried remerging gcc, got this:

Attempting to rebuild sandbox itself results in the same error:

This problem appears to date at least as far back as the 20131024 stage3 tarball.

i don't suppose changing the kernel version makes a difference ?  that's a pretty weird error.

what if you use a current stage3 (that includes glibc-2.17) ?
