As the failure is poppler related, check which version is installed and if 1.10.0 builds with it.
Comment 5 Stephan Litterst 2013-12-25 09:14:02 UTC
poppler is installed:

*  app-text/poppler
      Latest version available: 0.24.3
      Latest version installed: 0.24.3

gdal 1.10.0 is still in stabilization progress.
Is there a way to speed up the stabilization of gdal 1.10.0?

I've put gdal in package.keywords - sci-libs/gdal-1.10.0-r1 compiles fine.
From my point of view it could be stable.
