I managed to install evil 1.0.8 with the evil-1.0.5 ebuild.

Once more I needed to create the distfile as follows:

$ git clone git://gitorious.org/evil/evil.git
# revert repository to stable version 1.0.8
$ (cd evil; git reset --hard 72820d4ec9d1fb5fea026b6b73e94cb31606db75)
$ tar --exclude .git -cvJf evil-1.0.8.tar.xz evil
$ rm -rf evil
