I believe this is related to bug 486580 and python-exec, possibly the very same issue. Installing dev-lang/python-exec:2 may help. Another possible solution is (temporarily) unmerging all python-exec and allowing emerge to pull in fresh versions. Thanks. Will give a try with updated portage and python-exec I updated to portage-9999 and dev-lang/python-exec-2.0.1. I removed dev-lang/python-exec-0.3.1.
