After reading Sebastian's blog (sping) regarding bumping gnuchess to 6.1.0 I decided to take a look and emerged it. I saw it had a "readline" USE flag, however the gnuchess executable wasn't linked with any libreadline.so.6 even with readline flag ON. Later, I read on their TODO list:

so it seems there was never support on readline at all. I can fix the ebuilds if someone of the games team gives his ACK.
