Bug #490048 is still open, but upgrading to 1.10 seems to be necessary to resolve #490046 (and works for me).

should be stabilized sooner than later at least for x86 b/c stable gdal doesn't build any longer at a x86 due to a poppler compile error

Well, sci-libs/gdal-1.10.1 contains a variety of fixes and enhancements. I think we should aim to stable that as long as nothing more severe than bug 499448 rears its ugly head.
