Description vonabarak 2013-08-25 19:37:22 UTC
When running emerge in mc's (midnight commander's) subshel, and mc is running in gnu screen session, then every emerge output ends with `bash: 7: Bad file descriptor' and shell do not show prompt. If type Ctrl+C now it shows
^C

And now i can see shell prompt.

Bug can be reproduced only in combination "mc inside of screen" but not "screen inside of mc"

I wonder if there's something strange about the PROMPT_COMMAND variable. In that mc shell, try this:

  echo $PROMPT_COMMAND
Comment 3 vonabarak 2013-08-25 21:13:13 UTC
$ echo $PROMPT_COMMAND
pwd>&7;kill -STOP $$
Comment 4 Zac Medico gentoo-dev 2013-08-25 21:29:18 UTC
Okay, that PROMPT_COMMAND setting is the whole problem. I can't imagine the purpose that it serves, and it makes no sense within the context of how portage uses it. As a workaround, you can do this:

  export -n PROMPT_COMMAND

Or set this in make.conf:

  FEATURES="${FEATURES} notitles"
Comment 5 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2014-02-05 21:30:42 UTC
unless you can show a valid use case for that PROMPT_COMMAND, i'd suggest following Zac's suggestion. there's not an easy way for us to detect this case and then ignore PROMPT_COMMAND. portage is doing what you told it to do.
