Description Guy de Pourtalès 2004-04-16 09:21:03 UTC
Hello,

Please find attached jmdns-0.2.ebuild.

JmDNS is a Java implementation of multi-cast DNS and can be used for service registration and discovery in local area networks. JmDNS is fully compatible with Apple's Rendezvous (http://developer.apple.com/macosx/rendezvous).

Rendez-vous is a pretty cool technology for local networks services avoiding TCP/IP configuration (automatic network services detection). This java port is excellent bringing this solution to any Java running platform.

I suggest dev-java/jmdns. Naturally, this ebuild depends on any JDK above 1.3.1, according to original README.txt. I tried it with blackdown 1.4.1 and works fine.

I'd suggest net-dns/jmdns but that's only my opinion

Hello,

The comment of Daniel Black made me realize that I never said that JmDNS is first of all a development library...

If I look at the contents of net-dns, there is only tools and servers in it. But you may find libraries in dev-perl (Net-DNS) and dev-python (adns-python). In JmDNS, the tools are only examples of how to use the library, so I thought that the principal place was dev-java.
