the system is running on VM You have most likely run out of memory, check dmesg for oom-killer messages. Then add more memory or swap. Please don't CC arches on your own, there is nothing for us to do here. Hi Ben, I realized like an idiot that my swap area was off, I'm trying now with the swap on... but how can I configure Gentoo so that at boot it automatically mounts the swap area ? This is covered in the handbook in your fstab setup, stop by and see us on IRC (#gentoo @ freenode) or on the forums (http://forums.gentoo.org) if you need any help with this. The problem was : not enought memory to compile :) I suggest developers to allow compilers alert for not enought memory.
