Could you try mm-sources? It has the bk pull from the alsa tree. I'd be interested to see if that nails down any errors.

$ cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.4.
Compiled on Apr 16 2004 for kernel 2.6.6-rc1.

still no luck .....
Comment 6 Jason Cox (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-04-16 09:43:20 UTC
Which version of alsa-utils are you using?
Comment 7 René Marten 2004-04-16 09:52:00 UTC
*  media-sound/alsa-utils
      Latest version available: 1.0.4
      Latest version installed: 1.0.4

hmm don't know if it does matter:

sfxload -- load SoundFont on OSS AWE32 sound driver
   ver.0.5.0b  copyright (c) 1996-2003 by Takashi Iwai

no problem with 2.6.4-gentoo-r1 (compiled alsa-driver 1.0.4 against it)

Comment 9 Jason Cox (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-04-16 18:14:43 UTC
Seeing how it works on 2.6.4 and not 2.6.5, this is something for upstream. We don't patch alsa at all, except for alsa-drivers. Please head to http://bugme.osdl.org and post a bug there. If possible link back to this thread. They'd be better able to debug this.
