I have the exact same problem: # /opt/vmware/bin/vmware-networks --start Failed to initialize There's no option for more verbose output, nothing written to the system or kernel logs. If I do an lsmod, I see all the vmware modules: # lsmod Module Size Used by vmnet 39180 0 vmblock 9755 0 vsock 37959 0 vmmon 60109 0 vmci 59264 1 vsock vboxnetadp 17142 0 vboxnetflt 13538 0 vboxdrv 1782829 3 vboxnetadp, vboxnetflt fglrx 8542276 455 I have the following versions of the vmware packages installed: vmware-workstation-10.0.2.1744117 vmware-modules-279.2-r1 vmware-tools-9.6.2.1744117 My vmware-modules comes from the gmt-vmware overlay as the ones in portage won't compile for kernel version 3.14.2-gentoo.
