i only see a black screen when i do sc 'path/to/tutorial.sc'
this patch seems to fix the problem (not tested yet):

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:

sc '/path/to/tutorial.sc'

Actual Results:  
i see a black screen (can quit with 'q')

this is much better effort at cleaning up the code making it work on modern systems.

in fact, with a little hand holding perhaps, i'm willing to take over the maintance of this since i use sc quite often.

It should be better to package a concrete snapshot from github instead of using the 9999 ebuild. You can take a look to grive ebuilds as an example for doing that easily with github

To expand on that: I've been playing around with sc all morning and didn't observe the issue reported here even once, even while running the tutorial as indicated.
