A simple way of doing so would be to add a media-sound category to make_desktop_entry in eutils.eclass and to call it from the ebuild.

make-desktop-entry is a hack on a hack, and vapier doesn't want to use it any more... a replacement is on the way...

could you create a .desktop file for it and post it here, please?

just put the desktop file in /usr/share/applications
