After emerging gnome-2.6_rc5 the gnome-volume-control fails to run with the error message "Sorry, no mixer elements and/or devices found".

This was traced to the fact the gst-plugins-oss ebuild was still at the 0.6.4 version instead of the required 0.8.0 version.  After manually emerging the 0.8.0 version gnome-volume-control now runs.

The 0.8.0 gst-plugins-oss ebuild should be made a dependancy of the 2.6.0 gnome-media (the ebuild that contains the gnome-volume-control executable).
