Only the PATCHLEVEL is investigated, 3.4 has been mistaken for 2.4.
Which should delete the portion of 2.4 from a 
/var/tmp/portage/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-96.43.23/work/usr/src/nv/Makefile.kbuild.
