Description Walter Dnes 2013-02-10 23:11:30 UTC
I ran into these items, because I'm doing an AMD64 install ( install-amd64-minimal-20130110.iso ). This may also apply to other architectures...

1) The page http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?full=1 reads
> 2.b. The Gentoo Installation CDs
...
> The Minimal Installation CD is called install-amd64-minimal-<release>.iso
> and takes up around 150 MB of diskspace.

It's actually 180,355,072 bytes, an increase of 20%. I suggest updating to "approximately 200 MB of diskspace". This should last a couple of years before requiring updates.

2) The install CD has some rather old news items...
>(chroot) livecd / # eselect news list
>News items:
> [1] N 2010-08-01 --as-needed enabled in default profiles
> [2] N 2012-05-21 Portage config-protect-if-modified default
> [3] N 2012-09-09 make.conf and make.profile move
> [4] N 2012-11-06 PYTHON_TARGETS deployment
> [5] N 2013-01-23 Upgrading udev from 171 (or older) to 197

The 1st one should be dropped, and the 2nd one should be considered for dropping

3) While we're at it, the deprecated version 10.0 profile symlinks ( "eselect profile list" ) should be taken out of the install CD.

The news items on the installation cd itself are showing old ones as well because they haven't been read. I don't see where there are still links to 10.0 (unless these are on the installation cd environment only, in which case I'm not sure what exactly the error is).

I've updated the handbook to include the 200Mbyte size for amd64, alpha, ia64 and ppc (those are the architectures for which the displayed size was lower than the actual).

I'll reassign to the livecd folks for the other points (2.) and (3.)

Hi release team, please check out points (2.) and (3.).

2. Those news items should be dropped from the repo. I thought we were marking the news items as read' so I'll have to check what's going on.

3. I need to update the profiles. It would have helped if the old ones weren't deprecated so quickly.

1) This bug is really old.

Second) I definitely do not see eselect installed at all on the minimal CDs (I'm currently not convinced it was _ever_ installed in the minimal live media, but SwifT seemed to find what he was referencing so perhaps it was).

C) From the looks of Walter's original entry he's running these commands from within his chroot (hence the "(chroot) livecd / #" prompt), which means he's extracted the stage3, which means that point in the install process he's only using the kernel and possibly /etc/resolv.conf from the minimal CD. He may or may not have synced the Portage tree There...I said it. :P

Last) Sarcasm aside, I just cracked open the latest stage3 and saw nothing of the sort, which is correct. No news items and no profile listing. Those do appear after Portage is synced of course. Looks like this bug has long been fixed. Time to squash this guy!
